Mulching during a seasonal cleanup is extremely important in order to manage the impact of different weather conditions, sun exposure, and other aspects that hasten the natural decomposition process. One of the most noticeable transformations that occurs in mulch is the change in the color of undyed mulch material. After about a year, undyed mulch turns grey. While this will not impact the effectiveness of the mulch, it could reduce its attractiveness. When this happens, new mulch must be added to the top to cover the grey spots. This will also help mulch to maintain its necessary 2- to 3-inch thickness.

While dyed mulch holds its color longer, cheap dyed mulch contains an artificial dye that penetrates the soil. This requires that the mulch be removed and replaced every year so that it does not negatively impact the health of the soil.

Certain mulch materials, such as smaller, lighter materials, are also more prone to being washed or blown away over the year. While homeowners don’t need to remove mulch and replace it each year, they should measure the amount of mulch that is left during their seasonal cleanup sessions and add any amount that is needed to return the mulch to a satisfactory thickness.
